Shrine (Matt's Post on it), and our trip to Den Den Town.
The Shrine was amazing, a small forest in the middle of a city filled with statues and shrines.
I didn't understand some of it, but it was incredible to see. We witnessed a wedding procession heading out of the shrine as we went in. Out of respect, we didn't take any pictures, but it was interesting to see everyone dressed in traditional garb.
We saw a variety of small shrines within the shrine, to various deities within the area, a sampling of which are pictured above.
One interesting ritual is that you have to wash your hands before going into the shrine. We did this in the rabbit fountain, however we found a dragon fountain afterwards that looked pretty awesome.
We rallied to the hostel, then set out for Den Den town after lunch.
It had a variety of shops themed around various electronics; we mainly hit the gaming stores. The selection was pretty insane, and while most of it was Japanese, it also had some "import" English titles.
A few choice titles:
A collection of classic horror games: Biohazards 1 and 2 (Resident Evil) and Silent Hill.
A collection of classic Nintendo games. Includes Donkey Kong, Starfox, MarioKart, Super Mario, Mario RPG, Mother 2 (Earthbound), Zelda: a Link to the Past, among others.
Japanese Carcasonne.
Last Action Hero
I actually bought a couple of games today. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 (currently not available in English, thats my excuse), and a Japanese portable version of Settlers of Catan.
As Matt notes, the comic explaining the rules alone makes it worth the 1980¥ that it cost. Look at how distressed she is that two settlements cannot go next to each other.
And finally, a note about Japan in general; it is not designed for the tall. In a couple of the stores, Matt and I had to duck under signs and lights, and even our hostel room's door is shorter than us.
